UnBound is an experiment in making art and history accessible through interactive 3D. What began with public sculptures in Fergus Falls has grown into a way of showing how local stories can live online in forms that feel immersive, playful, and easy to share. This work is meant to spark ideas about what might be possible in your own community, whether you’re curious about the people who shaped it, interested in bringing a similar project to life, or looking for ways to keep this one thriving.
UnBound exists thanks to the people and partners who opened doors, shared knowledge, and championed community art.

Shared resources, materials, and insights that grounded the project in local history and helped connect the digital work to community heritage.

Provided Legacy funding support, making it possible to bring this experimental project to life and keep it accessible to the public.

Opened its doors to host workshops for youth and adults, offering space, support, and a welcoming environment for community learning.

UnBound was designed and developed by Lee Smalt, a motion designer and technical director based in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. Lee’s work explores how emerging digital tools can bring new life to local history and public art. With a background in design, motion, and community engagement, he focuses on building interactive experiences that connect people to place in unexpected ways.
